Job Description

A well-established construction organization in the West Houston area is seeking an Assistant Controller - Operations with a strong audit background in the construction industry. This role partners closely with Project Management and Finance/Accounting to standardize and streamline the monthly close process, improve job cost reporting, and enhance financial controls across projects.

The ideal candidate brings experience from a regional or Big 4 audit firm, a strong understanding of construction accounting, and a passion for process improvement and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage comprehensive financial reporting for construction projects in compliance with GAAP
  • Monitor and analyze project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance to support profitability
  • Partner with Project Managers on job setup, projections, accruals, budget summaries, internal project reviews, and contractual compliance
  • Prepare schedules of contracts and job cost analysis
  • Establish, document, and implement standardized accounting policies and procedures, including training initiatives
  • Support project audits and project close-outs
  • Prepare contractor financial statements, billings, and revenue recognition adjustments
  • Prepare and review job cost and revenue adjustments

Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
  • Working knowledge of construction systems
  • Strong analytical and reporting capabilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical experts, leadership, and end users

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required)
  • MBA or advanced accounting education (preferred)
  • Audit experience in the construction industry (regional or Big 4 firm required)
  • Commercial construction experience preferred
  • Industry certifications and project management experience are a plus
